Current appointments:

Research Investigator, NCRAR
Staff Neurologist, Sleep Disorders Clinic, VA Portland Health Care System
Associate Professor, Departments of Neurology, Behavioral Neuroscience, and Medicine (Division of Pulmonary & Critical Care), and Oregon Institute of Occupational Health Sciences, Oregon Health & Science University

Research interests:

My research program focuses on how sleep modulates neuropathological and behavioral outcomes in neurological disorders across the lifespan, including traumatic brain injury (TBI), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and neurodegenerative disease. As a neuroscientist, I examine both rodents and human subjects in our studies and my laboratory is renowned for its translational research spanning preclinical to human studies. We have expertise in performing and analyzing sleep EEG recordings, quantitative EEG methodology including machine learning, and experimental studies using animal models of chronic stress and disease. My group has primary peer-reviewed publications in high impact broad topic journals including Nature, Science, Journal of Clinical Investigation, Science Translational Medicine, and Science Advances.

I currently lead both observational and interventional studies on Veterans with TBI and sleep disorders. I am the PI on several active protocols and oversee data repositories containing over n=1200 Veterans with extensive demographic data, TBI/PTSD status, and symptom surveys, and the majority of whom have undergone overnight polysomnography. Two of these studies are funded by the Department of Defense to study sleep, chronic pain, and sensory sensitivity outcomes in Veterans with TBI. From these studies, we are interested in identifying novel mechanisms and approaches to treatment of chronic symptoms in Veterans with TBI.
