Employment and Training

The National Center for Rehabilitative Auditory Research (NCRAR) in Portland, Oregon, is always keen to talk to individuals who may be interested in becoming part of our Center. 1. Research Audiologists
We hire research audiologists to who work with a Principal Investigator on one or more grants. These individuals are responsible for subject recruitment, testing, data entry, and other research-related activities for ongoing research studies. Studies vary and thus so do the skills and requirements necessary for each. Examples of required skills include carrying out audiometric procedures, hearing aid fitting and counseling skills, ABR and OAE testing and other audiological skills. Individuals will be expected to work with one or more investigators on projects in the following areas: aural rehabilitation and counseling, cognitive effects of aging, hearing loss and medical pathologies, and ototoxicity. Candidates should have an Au.D. or a Masters degree in audiology. Salary is negotiable based upon previous research experience and will be commensurate with government pay scales for Portland OR.

2. Post-doctoral Fellows
The NCRAR does not have funding for post-doctoral fellowship positions, but can work with individuals to obtain funding through NIH or VA. Post-doctoral fellows will have the opportunity to carry out research studies with NCRAR investigators. 3. Ph.D. & Au.D. Students
The NCRAR often has mechanisms for support of Ph.D. and Au.D. students. The center has funding for one or two research-based Au.D. externships each year and the possibility of funding for Ph.D students conducting their thesis research through the VA Office of Academic Affiliations. NCRAR also has NIH T-35 funding for up to four summer research traineeship positions for individuals enrolled in an Au.D. program. 4. Investigators
The NCRAR is seeking a research scientist with expertise in technological aspects of hearing aids and signal processing. The Center can provide funding for the initial four years, but after this, individuals must seek independent funding through granting agencies such as VA RR&D, NIH, etc. The NCRAR has available laboratory space, instrumentation, and support staff for investigators. Salary is negotiable based upon previous experience and will be commensurate with government pay scales for Portland OR.
