Henry Lew, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Henry L. Lew is Clinical Associate Professor at Stanford University School of Medicine, and Director of Clinical Research of the PM&R Service located at the Veteran Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS). Dr. Lew earned his Bachelors and Medical degree at the National Taiwan University (1986) and then went on to earn a PhD in Otorhinolaryngology and Communicative Sciences at Baylor College of Medicine (1993). After PM&R residency training at the University of Washington in Seattle, he completed the NIH-K12 Rehabilitation Medicine Scientist Training Program.  In 2000, Dr. Lew joined the VAPAHCS and served as the Medical Director of the Comprehensive Rehabilitation Center until 2003, when he received a VA Rehab R&D award to study Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). He then became the Director of Clinical Research of their PM&R Service in 2006. Dr. Lew’s research focuses on various deficits related to TBI (including auditory dysfunction), and coordinating efforts to improve the quality of care received by the veterans and service members. He was recently funded by HSR&D to study the cost estimates in TBI care. Current projects include (1) using a simulator to enhance cognitive training after brain injury, and (2) evaluating the effects of methylphenidate in the early phases of recovery from TBI.  Other projects include quantification of functional recovery in patients wiApril 22, 2008aging, and traditional behavioral/neuropsychological measurements. A unifying theme of his research studies is to characterize and treat the sequelae of TBI.
