Research Interests
Dr. Mitch Turbin's primary research interests lie in the understanding and treatment of vocational and psychosocial adjustment of hard of hearing persons and persons with combined hearing and vision loss, topics on which he has published and lectured throughout the US and abroad.

Currently a Principal Investigator at NCRAR, Dr. Turbin is dedicated to advancing rehabilitation science and scholarship at VA. He has long been active in education for improving the quality of life for persons with disabilities. Dr. Turbin is Adjunct Professor in Deafness Rehabilitation at Western Oregon University, where he has taught since 1984. Dr. Turbin lectures widely to both professional and consumer audiences about coping with hearing loss. He recently served as a Commissioner of the Oregon Disabilities Commission, to which he was appointed by the Governor of Oregon in 2001. He also has served on a variety of Peer Review Panels for the US Department of Education, Office of Special Education and Rehabilitation Services. Dr. Turbin is currently a member of the Portland VA Medical Center EEO Advisory Committee, and serves as Special Emphasis Program Manager for Employees with Disabilities.

Dr. Turbin received his M.Ed. from Columbia University, and worked as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor in New York City. He earned his PhD in Counseling Psychology from the University of Oregon, and was Director of Services to Persons with Hearing Loss at Independent Living Resources in Portland before joining the staff at NCRAR in November 2002. Dr. Turbin is currently conducting “Randomized Trial of a Brief Patient-Centered Aural Rehabilitation Model,” a collaboration with the Portland VA Medical Center and the Bay Pines, Florida VA Health Care System.
