Overview A registered nurse for 30+ years, Dr. Pope has experience in acute care and public health, in both domestic and international settings. Her interest in research began when she worked at the Baltimore City Health Department Eastern Chest [Tuberculosis] Clinic where one of her responsibilities was to make the ‘real life’ link between people who were found to have identical strains of TB. By the time she completed her Ph.D. in infectious disease epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health, she had been the Project Director for an international research project (The Consortium to Respond Effectively to the AIDS/TB Epidemic – CREATE) based at the Johns Hopkins Center for Tuberculosis Research for four years and had also carried out her clinic-based doctoral research in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. Eager to be close to her two children and grandchildren, Dr. Pope moved to Portland and started work in 2007 at the Portland VA Medical Center. More interested in her role as ‘Gram’ than battling infectious disease abroad, Dr. Pope opted to pursue another research interest: the effects of environmental sound.
Research Interests Unwanted sound (noise) elicits physiologic and psychological responses and the responses are varied between individuals and within individuals through time. Given this variability, how can we optimize the patient care environment to enhance communication, promote confidentiality, and sustain comfort? Through the collaboration with an acoustical engineer and an experimental psychologist, we intend to build a body of evidence (standardizing vocabulary and methods along the way) that will strengthen the study of both the positive and negative effects of sound in patient care areas.
