Research Interests
Dr. Austin’s primary research interests at NCRAR are in elucidating the effect of diabetes on understanding speech, and determining whether commonly reported diabetes-related hearing deficits can be prevented using the same strategies as for prevention of other complications of diabetes.

Dr. Austin has been involved in various aspects of preventive medicine, including population-based control measures, research, and teaching, since 1970.  He has served in both federal and state health agencies, in research environments, and in teaching institutions.  His broader interests include chronic disease prevention and rehabilitation, application of appropriate study design to specific research questions, and policy development based on research evidence.
